Freedom from hip arthritis pain
Total Hip Replacement (THR)
Detailed information about this procedure as performed by Dr. Abdul Hannan in Lahore.
Total hip replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure in which the damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis. It is considered one of the most effective operations in modern medicine, with high patient satisfaction rates and excellent long-term outcomes. The procedure involves replacing the femoral head (the ball) with a metal or ceramic ball on a stem, and the acetabulum (the socket) with a metal cup with a plastic or ceramic liner.
Indications
The most common reason for hip replacement is severe osteoarthritis that has not responded to conservative treatment. Other indications include rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, hip fractures in elderly patients, and certain hip tumours. Dr. Hannan carefully evaluates each patient to determine whether hip replacement is the most appropriate treatment, considering the severity of symptoms, degree of joint damage on imaging, and the patient's functional goals.
Recovery and Outcomes
Following hip replacement, patients typically begin standing and walking with assistance within one to two days. A structured physiotherapy programme focuses on regaining hip movement, strengthening the surrounding muscles, and progressively increasing weight-bearing. Most patients can return to low-impact activities such as walking and swimming within six to eight weeks. High-impact activities are generally discouraged to protect the longevity of the implant.
